50+ Years of excellence
The Royce Approach to Learning
The Royce School tailors its curriculum to each student, rather than forcing students to fit the curriculum.
The Royce School has structured its classrooms, teaching methods, and curriculum to enable each child to achieve academic success.
How Learning Happens at The Royce School
If your child has average or above-average intelligence but isn’t reaching academic goals, The Royce School is here to help them thrive. We develop a personalized learning profile tailored to their needs, building on their academic strengths while addressing their learning challenges. Executive function skills and mindfulness activities help prepare students for success both academically and beyond. Parents work closely with the teaching team throughout the year to track progress toward their child’s goals. The Royce School also nurtures students’ strengths and interests through the arts, sports, and various extracurricular activities and clubs. Additionally, we offer support and college counseling to ensure each student is well-prepared for college and life.
Instruction grounded in the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
The Orton-Gillingham (OG) method is a phonetic reading instruction rooted in cognitive science. It actively involves the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic parts of the brain to develop or enhance neural pathways. The instruction is personalized, diagnostic, and tailored to each student. This approach promotes thinking and reasoning skills instead of simple memorization. Concepts are taught clearly and directly to foster genuine understanding of language, which in turn leads to automaticity and independent use in academics and other areas.
Orton-Gillingham Approach implemented throughout the curriculum.
The OG principles guide instruction at The Royce School beyond just reading, shaping our curriculum’s structure.
- Small classroom size with a 10:1 or lower teacher-to-student ratio.
- Instruction based on cognitive science
- Simultaneous multisensory instruction
- Concepts taught directly and explicitly
- Consistent encouragement to understand what they are learning, the importance of it, and its relevance to future learning.
All teaching staff at The Royce School are trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
We promote growth through experiences.
Mindfulness and executive functioning skills are introduced in lower school, emphasizing self-awareness and self-regulation. Our curriculum is tailored and supported by artificial intelligence software. The development of these skills is strongly emphasized in Middle School, then fine-tuned and applied in Upper School. We regularly collaborate with each student to practice the necessary skills for academic achievement and to build soft skills essential for success beyond school.
